There’s something about Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields which conjures a real outback goldrush adventure - the aftermath of a wildly colourful history built on the hopes and dreams of the gold rush.

Kalgoorlie ’s collection of historic buildings, character pubs and even its brothels, are remnants of more than a century of gold rush history. Couple this history with the modern almost cosmopolitan element that Kalgoorlie boasts today and you have a truly vibrant township, rich in character, atmosphere and colour.

This fusion of eras is however a relatively recent occurrence. It’s certainly a far cry from the 1890s when the discovery of gold triggered a population explosion as hopefuls from across the country descended on the region in the hope of striking it rich.

Life was rough for these early gold diggers, with disease rife and lawlessness commonplace. While multimillion dollar mining corporations have replaced the early diggers, the remnants of those wild and heady days add to that feeling of romance.

Across the Goldfields, ghost towns and eerie ruins abandoned along with the dreams and hopes of early prospectors add to the colour of the region.

You’ll find tranquil eucalyptus forests, wide sweeping plains, dry lake beds, low lying scrub land and spinifex fields. And such diversity of habitats means a great diversity of wildlife.

An incredibly high number of bird species flourish in the region as well as the threatened bilby, chuditch, mallee fowl and dunnart.

This natural bounty, combined with the region’s rich European and indigenous histories, its striking landscapes and its character citizens make the Goldfields a truly unique getaway.
