Get to know the amazing animals of the Golden Outback

When you think of the animals you find here in the beautiful outback, you may immediately conjure up images of the kangaroos of Lucky Bay. But there are thousands of amazing animals and birds to be found right across our region. Just off the rugged coastline of Esperance and the Fitzgerald Coast, you’ll encounter playful marine mammals such as dolphins, whales and sea lions. Whales can be spotted around these southern areas from June to November. The annual humpback whale migration along the Western Australian coast means you can normally spot whales off the southern coast from June to October. TOP TIP: Twilight Bay is a great location, close to town, to set up camp and watch for these gentle giants.

We mentioned the Lucky Bay kangaroos, and although they are more well known, that doesn’t mean they’re not totally adorable! Head down to Lucky Bay to find these friendly locals and enjoy watching them bound around as you take in the amazing ocean views.

Whilst in Esperance, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for sea lions and dolphins playing in the water opposite the foreshore. On the sweeping red plains of the Gascoyne Murchison region and the northern Wheatbelt, you will find small, versatile marsupials who have adapted perfectly to the dry outback environment. It’s not unusual to see emus, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, dingoes and galahs roaming the wide open spaces of the outback. TOP TIP: Be sure to look to the skies while travelling through the Northern Goldfields for a glimpse of the majestic wedge-tailed eagle. Narrogin and the Wheatbelt region are also home to some rare and unusual native marsupials including the bilby, boodie, echidna and woylie. You can take evening tours to see these animals in their natural twilight hours.
