The Headframe and winder engine, associated with the Sons of Gwalia goldmine operational from 1898 to 1963, was awarded an Engineering Heritage National Marker, under the Engineers Australia’s Heritage Recognition Programme on 31 May 2015.
The Sons of Gwalia timber incline headframe was constructed in 1898 during the time of Herbert Hoover as Mine Manager. It is the only incline timber headframe remaining in Australia today and of national significance.
The two cylinder steam-powered Fraser and Chalmers engine rated at 1000 horsepower and capable of hauling 1500 feet per minute was manufactured in England.
