The area of West Arthur includes Darkan, Duranillin, Moodiarrup and the historic settlement of Arthur River. Dating back to the 1850s, when a mail service was started between Perth and Albany, people gradually moved into the area around Arthur River to farm.
West Arthur attractions
- The Arthur Shearing Shed was built in the early 1900’s by the Piesse family who had extensive pastoral holdings in the area. Later as the area became more closely settled other farmers brought their sheep here for shearing, some droving the sheep a considerable distance.
- St Paul’s Church which was built in 1883 and is a rare example of a small rural church and graveyard which is still in use.
- Arthur River Hall Built of stone in the late 1800’s and added to in the 1930’s.
- Mt Pleasant Inn Kitchen (built in 1868) and the old Post Office are the only buildings remaining of the settlement which grew around the Mt Pleasant Inn which was built as a staging Post on the old Perth- Albany Road.
