Orienteering is an endurance sport involving navigation. Competitors use a special map to find their way around a course made up of a series of control points shown on the map.
Orienteering caters for all age groups with age classes for Juniors (two year age groups from 10 years and under up to 20 years of age), Elite adults (21-34 years of age) and veterans (five year age groups from 35 upwards). There are also B classes for inexperienced people.
Sprint orienteering events are held in urban areas, while middle and long distance events are held in forested areas.
