Cjmaddock Alexander Bay High Res 01

1. Alexander Bay (100km East of Town)

Tucked between Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks, Alexander Bay, or ‘A Bay’ as the locals call it, offers a stunning 9km stretch of snow-white shores. Similar to Lucky Bay, this pristine white sand beach, creates the same entertaining ‘squeaky sounds’ as you set off by foot and explore, but minus the crowds. For the fishing enthusiasts, the beach is ideal for small boat launches or opt to cast a line off the shore (especially during salmon runs). The bay offers unmatched opportunities for camping, with 20 first come, first served sites. It’s accessible via an unsealed road, best suited for 4WD vehicles.

Cjmaddock Little Hellfire Low Res 01

2. Little Hellfire Bay

If you’re searching for a quiet, sheltered spot in Cape Le Grand National Park, Little Hellfire Bay is the place to be. Often overlooked by its ‘slightly’ longer walk (only a mere 15-minutes), this beach offers a smaller and more secluded spot, perfect for your afternoon escape. The bay is well sheltered by surrounding headlands, making it the ideal option with those strong easterly, or south-easterly winds. Take a short hike up the nearby rock for stunning panoramic views of the bay, take a dip into the crystal-clear waters, or simply kick back on the soft, white sands. With fewer visitors, this bay offers a more intimate, sheltered escape.

Cjmaddock Quagi High Res 01 1

3. Quagi Beach (80km West of Town)

If you’re craving a quiet, off-the-beaten path destination, Quagi Beach should be on the top of your list. Nestled just 80-kilometres west of Esperance, this lesser-known gem offers clear waters, perfect for swimming and fishing, with plenty of rocky outcrops waiting to be explored. Access the beach via Farrells Road, a 10km unsealed route, with well-compacted gravel surface, making it easily navigable by 2WD. The peaceful campground, managed by the shire, offers 18 first-come, first-served sites, each just steps away from the ocean. If you’re up for an adventure, head south of the campgrounds and discover a hidden infinity rock pool, accessible only by 4WD.

Cjmaddock Munglinup High Res 01 2

4. Munglinup Beach (130km West of Town)

Pack your snorkel and flippers, it's time to head to Munglingup Beach. Protected by the reef, the beach forms a natural lagoon with sheltered waters, ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Hike east along the trail to a secluded second beach, and discover tidal road pools exposed during low tide. To the west is the Oldfield estuary offers calm waters for kayaking or SUP boarding, with 4WD tracks leading to the beach, perfect for small boat launches. For the campers, Munglingup Beach has 14 first-come, first-served sites – so be sure to arrive early! If you do miss out, the nearby caravan park offers additional accommodation just 3km down the road.

Cjmaddock Tagon High Res 01

5. Tagon Beach (Cape Arid National Park

Nestled within Cape Arid National Park, Tagon Beach is a remote gem perfect for those off-grid adventurers. Stretching 2km in length, this soft sand beach is best accessed by 4WD. However, the good news for those without a 4WD, is that there is a picturesque 4km hiking track from Yokinup Bay to Tagon Beach. For those who want to visit Tagon Beach but perhaps not walk so far, there is 2WD drive access to a lookout above Little Tagon Bay where you can join the hiking track. Due to its exposed location and large swells, swimming is not recommended. But hear us out, Tagon Beach itself is a favourite fishing spot among locals, perfect for both beach and rock fishing.
