Visit Australia’s largest ghost town, right here in the WA Goldfields.

The story of the abandoned gold mining town Kanowna (originally known as White Feather) is relatively unknown to most, yet Kanowna once boasted 12,000 inhabitants in and around the townsite - staking its claim as Australia’s largest ghost town.

Little remains to mark the passing of this once thriving and important centre. The Eastern Goldfields Historical Society has rectified this by increasing the awareness of the rich history of this town through the Kanowna Heritage Trail.

Follow the signs from the top of Hannan Street to the Kanowna Heritage Trail. Located just 22 kilometres from Kalgoorlie on a sealed road, Kanowna offers a unique and quiet experience

of an abandoned gold rush town.

Learn of the Sacred Nugget hoax, the Cemetery Rush (never have so many men been so keen to stake their own claims in a cemetery!) and be amazed by the larger-than-life character of Tom Doyle - miner, publican, mayor, promoter and defendant!
