Gunbarrell Highway

Set off on the Gunbarrel Highway and experience one of Australia's most famous and challenging four wheel drive tracks. Built by surveyor Len Beadell, this 1,400 kilometre outback adventure is perfect for the confident four wheel drive enthusiast who can handle the challenge of washaways, heavy corrugations, stone, sand and flood plains.

Excellent bush camps, many with bores, dot the Gunbarrel Highway that runs from Wiluna in Western Australia’s Northern Goldfields to Yulara in the Northern Territory. Highlights of the highway include Giles Weather Station, Banjo Creek, Mt Beadell, Lasseter’s Cave and Docker River. Those who tackle this track will enjoy retelling the story of how they conquered the rugged and unforgiving “Gunbarrel”.

Parts of the track are only suitable for high clearance four wheel drive vehicles and should only be attempted by confident drivers. Supplies and services are limited and road conditions can vary, so plan ahead, stock up on food, water and fuel and contact the local visitor centre for up-to-date track information.
