5 Day Coastal Wildflower Trail

The Coastal Wildflowers Self Drive takes you on a journey of discovery through spectacular natural scenery that is home to some of Western Australia’s most stunning spring wildflowers. Wildflowers can only be seen during the flowering season, which runs from September to November in this region, depending on seasonal rains.

Day 1: Perth - Hyden
(340 kilometres/4 hours)

From Perth, begin the Coastal Wildflowers Self Drive by turning west, 10 kilometres past Brookton, to Boyagin Rock Reserve, which features orchids, dryandras, drummond's gums, grevilleas, kunzeas, isopogons, hakeas, petrophiles, leucopogons, hibbertias. Travel to the Dryandra Woodland and see spectacular displays of pink and lemon orchids. Look for Jacksonia around Narrogin before travelling on to Hyden and the spectacular Wave Rock.

Day 2: Hyden – Esperance
(500 kilometres/6.5 hours)

Head east out of Hyden, following the unsealed Granite Woodlands Discovery Trail, part of the Great Western Woodlands and one of the world’s greatest untouched Eucalypt Woodlands still in existence, with its interpretive signage through pristine woodland and wildflower country, to Norseman. Then onto the scenic coastal town of Esperance.

Day 3: Esperance and national parks

Visit Cape Le Grand National Park and marvel at the vivid blue waters of Lucky Bay. See pigmy honey possums, bandicoots and grey kangaroos and an abundance of spring wildflowers.

Day 4: Esperance – Hopetoun
(250 kilometres/2.5 hours)

Travel to Ravensthorpe, visit Monjingup Lake Reserve and Stokes Inlet National Park. See mallees, wattles and peas at the Ravensthorpe Range and explore Fitzgerald River National Park to find royal and pincushion hakea.

Day 5: Hopetoun – Perth
(620 kilometres/7 hours)

Return to Perth via the Wheatbelt wildflower areas of Lake Grace, Dumbleyung, Wagin and Williams.
